The Importance of Sheet Metal Work in Infrastructure Development

Infrastructure comes in many different forms and functions–utilities like electric lines, plumbing, and environment control, various types of transportation, telecommunications, construction projects and more–but they all depend in some way on the sheet metal work done by fabrication companies.

Why sheet metal?

Sheet metal work is crucial for just about any industry that uses metal. Sheet metal is one of the most versatile construction materials, able to be made into parts smaller than hinges or larger than the sheet metal used in HVAC systems. Regardless of the size or shape of the part, sheet metal also retains its structural integrity and strength, even when formed into unique designs. It’s also lightweight and durable, making it excellent for use in transportation applications where manufacturers are looking to reduce the weight of the vehicle, and in turn, fuel consumption.

Sheet metal, depending on the type of metal itself, also tends to be highly resistant to weather conditions like rain, snow, strong winds, and a wide range of temperatures. This makes it an excellent structural material for many different construction and telecommunications needs, from enclosures to decorative pieces and more. It can endure the tough outdoor conditions necessary to maintain its appearance and protect other components of an assembly that might be more susceptible to corrosion and other types of damage.

Plus, sheet metal comes in all different types. Aluminum is the most lightweight, offering corrosion resistance and thermal conductivity, while stainless steel is famous for its strength, shiny appearance, and resistance to all types of corrosion. Copper and brass are less common, but still popular for more niche applications, functional and decorative.

The Many Roles of Sheet Metal Work in Infrastructure

Sheet metal components can be found in just about every aspect of infrastructure. Transportation is a huge part of modern-day infrastructure, and sheet metal is used in everything from airplanes to buses to city trolleys and underground trains. Telecommunications manufacturers require sheet metal components for enclosures to protect equipment and many different structural elements as well. Sheet metal work can also be seen in many different construction applications, from decorative architecture to roofing and siding to smaller components like locks, gears, bearings, and hinges.
