Custom Precision Technologies offers a wide range of services, such as shearing, in order to provide our customers with finished products. Shearing is one of the secondary operations that we perform in order to remove any unwanted material from a sheet of metal, or to prepare stock for stamping and other processes.
The basics of the shearing process
Shearing is a cutting force applied perpendicular to material causing the material to yield and break, usually through a blade affixed to a tool or a machine. The location of the cut is carefully controlled, and the result is a plate cut out to size from a larger stock. Though shearing is typically a preliminary step to prepare sheet metal for later fabrication, we also use it to produce smaller blanks for use in our CNC presses.
The benefits of shearing
There are several advantages to shearing, especially in-house as we offer it rather than outsourcing the operation. Sheet metal doesn’t need to be heated in order to be sheared, and the operation can be carried out at room temperature, which helps reduce energy consumption. It also produces far less waste than other fabrication methods used to cut sheet metal down to size, which saves on material costs as well.
Shearing at Custom Precision Technologies
Custom Precision Technologies offers metal shearing services to our customers requiring this metal-fabricating service. Our sheet metal shear includes programmable back gauging to insure precision and accuracy. Note that if your material exceeds the capabilities of our shear, CPT can easily waterjet cut it to size.
CPT operates a metal shear with a capacity of:
- Gauge: Up to 0.25” (1/4”)
- Length: Up to 20’ (longer when on a coil)
- Width: Up to 10’
- Tolerance: +/-.015 (tighter tolerances can be offered on as quoted basis)
